A typical forest deer with shaggy, dark brown coat, and large spreading antlers; Sambar is India's largest deer; ear and tail are relatively large; antlers are three-tined

Habitat:

dry-thorn, dry deciduous, moist deciduous, semi-evergreen and evergreen forests
They are found all over India, except arid regions of Western India
