Field Notes

Description:

Less than 6 mm in size, these two are feeding on my baby peaches, laying eggs, and mating all at the same time. Known as the dreaded Plum Curculio, this true weevil leaves behind a hard, clear, crystallized substance that oozes from the fruit, also seen in this photo.

Habitat:

Fruit trees (plum, pear, and peach) in my yard.

Notes:

For my 300th spotting on Project Noah, I bring you a little known and rarely photographed arthropod - the dreaded Plum Curculio, a truly evil weevil. Hopefully, this doesn't offend anyone on this site, but the war to eradicate this pest from my yard began today. Unfortunately, it is too late for all of my fruit this year.
