Field Notes

Description:

A beautiful tiny day cricket measuring at 8mm in length only. Body unusually black and white. Fairly common. This species can only be found in Borneo and nearby islands.

Habitat:

Live on plant leaves in the forest of Gomantong Caves area on the way to Sukau, Lower Kinabatangan, Sabah. All of these crickets that I have spotted are spotted on short plant leaves. So far distributed in forest area or forest edge from Kinabatangan to Sandakan.

Notes:

>>>Map accuracy : 200m diameter. A very special thanks to Bayucca for identifying this.

Chun, I got the feedback from Siegfried Ingrisch, the first describer. As usual and as a scientist they do not want fix themselves to ID it from just a picture and without comparing with their own material (DNA, genital specimens etc), what I fully understand. I confirmed the genus Rhicnogryllus, but think, that there might be other and probably not yet described species. So, I would go with Rhicnogryllus cf. bipunctata, so we are on the safe side.
Hi Mark, I am not sure whether this is a nymph or an imago. I have only seen this species twice in the same age group.
