Field Notes

Description:

It was suggested in the comments to look at the genus Xylaria ( http://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/55268-Xylaria ). It does bear some slight superficial resemblance to X. hypoxylon, specifically the form commonly described as candle-snuff fungus. There is a Kew Gardens reference to the species being associated with Cocos nucifera in Malaysia. Not enough to call this spotting that yet. X. anisopleura (but a similar image not yet located) is also listed as associated with coconut palm in Sierra Leone from the same database. There are records for Xylaria from Australia including X. anisopleura with the latter also recorded from northern Queensland. There is a record from the Philippines as well for the species (Missouri Botanical Garden library).

Habitat:

These fungi were growing on a rotting coconut log in a large semi-urban yard and garden next to a disturbed patch of remnant forest. This location is in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

This spotting represents yet another species of fungus on these same logs. This also has a white powdery residue, but the shape of these fungi are different from the simultaneous spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/280716006
