Field Notes

Description:

Mostly brown wings with patch of rufus and green near top with black spot.
Ranging thoughout most of eastern North America. The larva of the species gives a rather painful sting if bothered. The caterpillars feed on leaves of apple, basswood, cherry, chestnut, maple, oak, redbud, sycamore, willow, and other broad-leaved woody plants.

Habitat:

My farm - Sheet on side of barn, attracted from surrounding fields, marshes and woodlands by light.
