Field Notes

Description:

There are 7 different species of honey bees, and 44 different subspecies. Each species and subspecies has its own minute differences in appearance. However, all have the same basic anatomy.

Their bodies consist of a head, thorax (or midsection), and abdomen (or rear section). The first section, the head, contains a pair of antennae, and mouthparts. Next, the thorax is where the wings and six legs, attach to the body. Finally, the famous stinger is at the end of the abdomen.

Habitat:

Our garden in Windwardside at the foot of the Volcano Mount Scenery in the centre of Saba an island in the Dutch Caribbean in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

Notes:

LOVE having these guys in the garden. However a bit concerned about their need to feed from the hummingbird feeders. We have a HUGE avocado tree in the garden ( unfortunately all blossom got blown of recently) and I plant as much Bee flowers as possible. However not much flowers at the moment. Are they hungry and how can I keep feeding them? Is it ok for them to eat the sugar water from the hummingbird feeders?
