Field Notes

Description:

Eastern carpenter bee. The common eastern carpenter bee is the bee most often seen in the eastern United States. It is often mistaken for the large bumblebee species, as they are similar in size and coloring. The upper surface of a carpenter bee's abdomen is bare and shiny black. Carpenter bees tunnel into wood to lay their eggs.

Habitat:

This carpenter bee was spotted in a field of wild flowers at our local county park. It would go to the flowers for a while and then would go to a tree.
