Field Notes

Description:

The adults have a brown back and wings, a white belly, and a white breast with two black bands. The rump is tawny orange. The face and cap are brown with a white forehead. The eyering orange-red. The chicks are patterned almost identically to the adults, and are precocial — able to move around immediately after hatching. The Killdeer frequently uses a "broken wing act" to distract predators from the nest, 2nd photo.

Notes:

They had a nest somewhere on a rock drainage "jetty" but without getting too close, I couldn't find it

Thank you. I was thrilled to stumble on them. Tried to discretely find the nest, but couldn't. I'm sure it was near the adult and under the overhanging branches. As common as they are, I still think they're a great spotting!
