Unknown Spider

Field Notes

Description:

I was helping to prepare a garden bed for planting when we accidentally dug up this spider. It's hole in the ground was impressive, like someone had placed a pole in the dirt and then removed it. I moved the spider to a safe place away from the garden areas.
Large, dark brown and black spider.

Habitat:

Suburban, field area. Dug up in a vegetable garden.

Notes:

Looks similar to Genus Antrodiaetus (Folding-door Spider). These images were on an old computer. I had no way to retrieve them and had to take a picture of the pictures off the screen.

I caught mine in my pit fall traps I'm using for my herp research, but I think I only saw two the entire summer. So again, with knowing very little, I would call it A. lincolnianus, assuming that's the correct genus lol. I'm taking Arachnology in the fall so hopefully soon I'll be better with spiders :)

Ashley, I couldn't find any info on these spiders in my area. I wish I knew more. This is the only time I have ever seen one of these. It's amazing such a large spider can be roaming around here and no one sees them!! I did a bit of research and found similar looking spiders in Genus Antrodiaetus. They seem to be found in this region (though no reports from NY on Bug Guide). They are Folding-door Spiders. http://bugguide.net/node/view/23442/bgpage?from=0

Take into consideration how little I know about spiders, but I agree that it's a trapdoor spider. It looks like this one I saw last year, doesn't mean it's even remotely related though haha http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/27398215
