it's a beautiful moth caterpillar - see suggestion above
It was in the grass close to a building. I touched it with a leaf and it curled into the ball in the picture. It has black hairs with orange/red stripes that are not hairs, but I don't want to speculate what they are. Let me know if this helps. It may be a butterfly.
This looks an amazing thing. Please tell us something about it. Was it moving? What size was it? What happened to it?
