Field Notes

Description:

Family: Sphingidae, Subfamily: Macroglossinae. (Small Sphinx Moths) TL: 30-40 mm. Wingspan: 57-75 mm. Pinkish mauve FW has reddish borwn shading beyond straight media line. Dull orange HW has purplish border. Adults feed on nectar. Hosts: Azalea, blueberry, sour gum and viburnum.

Habitat:

Woodlands, meadow, lawns. Will come to light.

Notes:

With Virginia Creeper Sphinx Moth (Darapsa myron) (Small Sphinx Moth) TL: 28-38 mm. Came flying in while I had the Azalea Sphinx Moth on my finger so I thought, why not! Found at side garage light near woodlands and meadow. First time spotting these two sphinx moths. Photo #1 Azalea Sphinx moth on left. Photo #6 Azalea Sphinx moth on right.
