Hi Bernadette! If you remain undecided between promissa or coniuncta (as I am) please leave the scientific name as Catocala sp. to fit in with our database standards. Possible species can go into your notes. Maybe an expert will highlight clear criteria for us to make the difference.
What a sweet, lil visitor, Bernadette, indeed!! :)
Thanks for the help, ladies! I was happy to have this visitor in my bedroom, and then I helped it find its way outside again.
You are right, Daniele!! Looks more like the promissa to me now, too!!
There are many Catocala species in Europe. The forewing and hindwing markings here do not match optata. They seem closer to promissa or conjuncta (coniuncta). All species are listed on these specialized pages: http://www.lepiforum.de/lepiwiki.pl?Catocala_Coniuncta http://www.leps.it/indexjs.htm?SpeciesPages/CatocPromi.htm
Those pink underwings are are sooooo pretty!! :)
