Field Notes

Description:

True to its name this bird is found in the frigid north across the Northern Hemisphere. In North America it is found from Alaska east to the north Atlantic Coast and south through the Rockies to New Mexico. These owls are secretive and nocturnal, feeding on small mammals detected by sound. This photo shows a juvenile bird perched in an evergreen in Washington, one of the only known records of this species in the state and located by my friend Walker Noe (an owling legend) and myself.

Habitat:

High elevation woodlands

Notes:

Due to the sensitivity of the sighting, the GPS point was intentionally left inaccurate.
