Thank you for the suggestions Scott & Rob much appreciated. It landed on my arm Scott, then would take off briefly and then land again. Will keep trying to narrow it down for ident
Ulidiidae (picture-winged fly) or signal fly (Platystomatidae) or perhaps a Tephritidae (fruit fly). Latter also has picture wings and abdominal prosess like that. (I've only seen brown/yellow specimens but that doesn't mean anything though). So would this individual sit still?
Possibly a Picture-winged fly http://bugguide.net/node/view/283738 http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2009/12/13/two-picture-winged-flies-including-black-onion-fly-and-a-signal-fly/
Quite cute Rob .. kept landing on my arm, so what else could I do but take a few photos. I like the detail on the wings
