Description:

Looks like a mud wasp but much bigger and with orange wings. It was too windy for it to fly, so it was crossing the street on foot when I saved it.

Yep - spider wasp. Probably one of the tarantula hawks, which hunt tarantulas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula_hawk
