Notes:

At one time I'd have said this was a bee, with confidence, but I've learned there's a lot of mimics out there.

Thanks, Laura. There was a matching picture there, so I'm going to say it is a hoverfly.
You're right, it's not a bee! It's a kind of fly belonging to the family Syrphidae. There are many kinds out there, and I'm not familiar with the ones you'd get in the States. Have a look over here though, see if you can narrow it down! http://bugguide.net/node/view/196
