Field Notes

Description:

About 3.5" tall. A dry brown cap with a thick white stem that appears sectioned off with thick horizontal lines. It appeared to have just pushed up through the forest floor today.

Habitat:

Edge of a mixed forest.

It should still be there . . . I'll check tomorrow and see if it's still fresh enough for good photos.
For Amanitas it's very helpful to carefully dig up the entire specimen and take pictures of the stipe and base. Your find might be something from the section Vaginatae.
I'm an idiot when it comes to fungi . . . .is there any way to narrow it down to a species?
