Field Notes

Description:

A large caterpillar with sharp-looking but soft and flexible spines along it's back. A mixture of colors, with different variations among a "colony", some having more red than others, but always with pale grey-blue and yellow as well.

Habitat:

Prefers Mopane trees grouped together or in a forest (to eat) (hence it's name), but (as at our home) will also live on Burkea trees (*I*Burkea africanus*I*).

Notes:

An edible caterpillar, considered a delicacy in some parts of Africa and is a source of protein for many impoverished people.
