Field Notes

Description:

Dark brown, blackish wings both front and back with a band of white spots on all the wings. Orange tips to front wings can also extend along edges of both wings, as in this mating pair. Underwing (shows in bottom butterfly on photo #1) is more complicated with bands of brick red and blue grey alternating beyond the white band.

Habitat:

Westcoast marshland here called Pitt Polder. Range extends from Southern BC south to Baja Califoria. Abundant butterfly.

Notes:

Photo #1 shows a mating pair that were flying together and perching on leaves for several moments. Then they separated and fly away. I think photo #2 was one of these individuals later perching on a tree near the path.
