Field Notes

Description:

This is a juvenile Visayan Hornbill, they don't have vibrant colours like the adults yet. Locally, they are called Taric-tic for the sounds they make.
This juvenile was seen in a remote village during a hiking trip. It looks like it is kept as a pet although it was not tied with a rope or kept in a cage. I saw it flew for short distances within the compound of the house.

Habitat:

This was seen in a remote village surrounded by forested areas that has been opened up for agriculture and the local villages also cut down trees for charcoal.

Notes:

Visayan Hornbill - Penelopides panini is listed as Endangered in IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
