Small and spiny. About 5 mm.

Habitat:

Meadow. Hlane camp site.

Correct, not a larva, but a Spiny Leaf Beetle, Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae and Hispini or Hispinae. http://www.ispot.org.za/node/162759

Without knowing, I have the feeling that this is a bit more developed than a larva. Have you seen many with antennaes?
