Brown tarantula (female with egg sac)
Aphonopelma hentzi
36.7473, -95.9808
Field Notes
Description:
Oklahoma's only tarantula species. Males can often be found wandering across roads at night, typically in late summer, although they are quite common this year right now. Females sit tight in their burrows and wait for the male to come find them.
Habitat:
Mixed prairie and woodland
Notes:
This marks the first time I've observed my native tarantula species with an egg sac. She was down in a burrow but stayed near the opening so I could see her. Her burrow was under a discarded board in an illegal trash pile made by local residents.
