Diurnal Firefly
Ellychnia sp.
16.7354, -92.6387
Field Notes
Description:
Small black Firefly of the Family Lampyridae, only 8 mm long. The head is extended somewhat in most of the photos, usually the head is barely visible beneath the pronotum as in Picture 4. I forgot to turn it over :(
I went back the next day and found it and turned him over. It does not have light producing organs on the ventral surface (last picture). The pink coloring of the pronotum is also visible on the underside. Some species of adult fireflies, especially of the genus Ellychnia are diurnal and lack the bioluminescent organs on the underside of the abdomen.
Habitat:
Overgrown field, semi-urban area, outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
