Description:
Empis is a genus of dance fly, in the fly family Empididae.
The genus Empis includes some 500 species characterized by a more or less spherical shape of the head, with a visible neck, large and outstanding eyes, and armed with a well-developed and rigid proboscis to suck in their prey.
In many species, males develop silky balls with a prey inside as an offering to the females while they dance in front of them, to get to mate while the female devours his 'gift'.
The larvae develop in fertile and rich soil, leaf litter and under the bark of trees.
