This one was also a little challenge for me! It is always helpful if you at least know the family. Here is a link for some typical silhouettes of moths: http://bugguide.net/node/view/21675 Then starts the hard work of searching and comparing. Bugguide is an excellent site forsearching families, tribes and genus. I usually use my 5-1-5-1 system: 5 seconds for the family, 1 minute for the genus and 5 minutes for the species and another 1hour for special cases, after that I give up and try maybe another time. Make some bookmarks of website where you fel comfortable to search, but as already mentioned above, bugguide is the best for me...
