Field Notes

Description:

Very large flesh colored mushrooms with broad stems of the same color. Unique. I've never before seen a cap that so much resembles someone's elbow, a wrinkled peach or a pancake. The cap also has a depression in the center, where it darkens to a rust color. Dry. The outer edges are scalloped. Gills are cream colored.

Habitat:

They're growing in moderate shade in temperate woodlands. The substrate appears to be detritus/plant matter.

I'm intrigued by any ID suggestion on this cool mushroom, Mark. Thanks again. I admittedly don't know too much about fungi, so I'll list it as Lactarius sp. for now.

Definitely a 'Milkcap' - Lactarius species... possibly tabidus or volemus or..... good luck with sp. :-) It looks like our http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lactarius_clarkeae_15003.jpg but I don't think you would have that. Maybe Birch milkcap.
