Field Notes

Description:

Some form of large Ant (about the same size as a carpenter ant) that appears to be laying eggs in a couple branches of my ornamental tree.

Species ID Suggestions

Carpenter ants (workers)

Camponotus sp.

Comments (1)

They *are* carpenter ants, but they are tending aphids, not laying eggs. The aphids are the yellow objects in the image. Aphids secrete a sweet liquid waste product called "honeydew," and ants LOVE it! So, they guard the aphids from predators like lady beetles.
