Field Notes

Description:

The largest jumping spider I can remember seeing, possibly about 1 cm long. It had a long dark green abdomen with variably-sized white spots and dashes. The torso was dull black with thick white lateral stripe on each side, above the appendages. Legs were black. It jumped onto a laptop screen, and while perched on the top, waved its arms defiantly, a bit like King Kong pounding its chest. What was it doing??

Habitat:

In a highly disturbed, garden habitat, within the dry forest ecoregion on the valley floor of Yeguare Valley at Zamorano Univeristy (the picnic tables between the two environment department buildings). Underneath planted mango (Manguifera indica) trees; near by were buildings, plant nursery, riparian strip (narrow), a small pine plantation, and extensive melon fields. Altitude 750 meters above sea level.

Notes:

Photographed with mt Huawei cell phone, zoomed in. Then the photo was cropped tightly.
