thread waisted wasp
Eremnophila aureonotata
41.8502, -72.3654
Field Notes
Description:
This wasp has a thin thread for a waist, which is how it got its name. It is about 3/4 inch long and is rarely seen. The colors include black, orange, yellow and red.
Habitat:
Old fields near deciduous or other(?) woodlands. The wasp is commonly found on wildflowers with large clusters of blossoms, such as Queen Anne's Lace. Mating pairs on flowers are common.
Notes:
I have never seen this particular kind of wasp, and as I read more about it realized that it is a rare sighting.
