Field Notes

Description:

This spider belongs to the Genus Leucauge (usually called Orchard Spiders) in the family Tetragnathidae (Long Jawed Orb-weavers). It had constructed its web in the same area as the Leugauge sp. in - https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/1317393933... and its web was moored to banana stems in similar fashion.

Habitat:

Spotted in the backyard of the rice mill. The web of this Orchard spider was not quite horizontal. It sloped noticeably, perhaps at around 20 degrees from horizontal.

Notes:

Orchard Spiders tend to have a way of moving around on their webs which makes them recogniseable, with their long front legs always stretched out in front. The spider in this spotting was not moving in the usual, purposeful manner of other Orchard Spiders that I have seen. It was almost tumbling around and looked rather like a drunken contortionist. I did not manage to get photos which really convey what I am trying to describe, but if you are interested in Orchard Spiders, you might want to compare the photos shown here with the photos in the spotting mentioned in Description above. The difference is remarkable.
