Field Notes

Description:

Looks like a Ferruginous duck in eclipse plumage but I have some doubts. It has been ringed so maybe captive. The chick in Pic 2 belongs to an Egyptian Goose!

Habitat:

In a wildlife park but roaming free.

It also looks similar to a Scaup, and the American Ring-necked duck, except that it lacks the pointed head of the latter. My book says Pochard x Tufted is a possibility but my best guess is a Ferruginous x Scaup..

What's bothering me is the bill pattern...it's very reminiscent of a common pochard's are Athya ducks known to interbreed?
