Field Notes

Description:

Family: Sphingidae, Subfamily: Sphinginae (Large Sphinx Moths - although this common sphinx moth shown is very tiny at only 27-35 mm) Wingspan: 45-60 mm (2.36 inches) Slate gray FW is peppered with white scales. Three black dashes extend through media area. Black spot is black. Hosts: Pine and tamarack. Adults feed on nectar from tubular flowers.

Habitat:

Woodlands, meadows. (comes to light)

Notes:

2 a.m. by the porch light on the 4th of July. I am glad I stayed up.
