Description:
These semi-wild orangutans were in the process of being re-intoduced to nature after having been rescued from captivity or habitat destruction. All were spotted in the same general location on the same day. The Bornean orangutan is endangered through massive loss of habitat primarily. A secondary but important threat is from hunting of adults and capture of juveniles for pets and the pet trade.
Habitat:
At Camp Leakey, Tanjung Puting National Park, Central Kalimantan.
Notes:
"Orangutan" is from the Malay language meaning "man of the forest". It is correctly pronounced aw-rang-oo-tan. That's with "short a" vowels and with NO terminal "ng" sound (i.e. it does NOT rhyme with that "orange space drink").
