Field Notes

Description:

Mixing in with Common Terns and Black-winged Stilts, the Little Terns are much smaller and have yellow bills. Unlike the Common Terns which tend to do most of their feeding out to sea where the water is deeper the Little Terns often hunt over the shallow lagoons in the marshes, hovering like a Kestrel before plunging from a considerable height to catch their prey of tiny fish perhaps an inch or so long.

Habitat:

Coastal marshes
