Field Notes

Description:

These lovely moths are day flyers and belong to the Zygaenidae family, they have a wingspan of around 35mm and are quite common around Europe favouring plants like knapweed and thistle. Each of these thistles was covered in around 6 moths which all seemed to be clambering for the top spot! You could hardly see the plants for all the moths but as this was a summer day it isnt an unusual sight.

Habitat:

found at Brockadale nature reserve, west Yorkshire. Owned and maintained by the Yorkshire wildlife trust.
