Field Notes

Description:

Immature fruiting bodies were found emerging through leaf litter and on older specimens. Young specimens have a brown to orange (slightly lacquered) base that transitions to a white top. An expanding, white, pored, fertile surface can be seen in some of these. Mature specimen is dark red-brown to cinnamon with a similarly colored stalk. Pores have aged to dark brown/black.

Habitat:

Growing on buried roots beneath a decaying willow oak (Quercus phellos) stump
