Great Blue Heron
Ardea herodias
33.1528, -97.0458
Field Notes
Description:
Largest of the North American herons with long legs, a sinuous neck, and thick, daggerlike bill. Head, chest, and wing plumes give a shaggy appearance. Great Blue Herons appear blue-gray from a distance, with a wide black stripe over the eye.
Habitat:
This frequent visitor to the city maintained retention pond was happily preening on the board walk until 3 children ran towards it. It flew to the top of the surrounding trees and loudly complained while it finished preening. Eventually it returned to fishing when the coast was clear of children.
