Field Notes

Description:

Aloe vera belongs to the genus Aloe which contains about 500 species of flowering succulent plants. They belong to the family Xanthorrhoeaceae. The Aloe genus is native to Africa; species are found in southern Africa, the mountains of tropical Africa, various islands off the coast of Africa including Madagascar, and the Arabian Peninsula.

Habitat:

The natural range of Aloe vera is unclear, as the species has been widely cultivated throughout the world. These Aloes were spotted at the Brisbane Botanical Gardens, Mt. Coot-Tha.

Notes:

Although similar in appearance to cacti, Aloe vera is not a cactus but a succulent and a member of the lily family. Aloe plants are more closely related to tulips and asparagus than to cacti.
