Field Notes

Description:

What I believe to be Horned Grebe found in a small flock during spring migration

Habitat:

In an area kept open by a dam, where the river flows into the lake

Notes:

This was a particularly hard spring for waterfowl and birds in general as many flew up here only to find many or most of our lakes and sloughs still completely frozen over. This problem forced a large number of birds into small areas where there was open water to be found. What created a hardship for the birds was a blessing for me as I was able to see large numbers, more variety and get closer to them than ever before.
