Description:
About 60mm in diameter, these rounded tough fruiting bodies had a greenish black outer skin with veins of ochre. When split, they revealed a matrix of black with elongated quill-like cream spore sacs. Some of these cream spore sacs flattened out to lenticular shapes nearer the skin. The base of the fungus was denser with speckled black and white material and further down, it was stained yellow stain.
Habitat:
Spotted in large numbers at the base of a stringy bark Eucalyptus tree.
Soil- very dry and dusty.
Notes:
A previous spotting of mine shows a more mature fruiting body with disintegrated skin and exposed pea-shaped spore sacs.

This fungi is micorrhizal and can grow in association with many types of plants and trees.
Has one synonym : P. tinctorius. Commonly also called "Horse Dung Fungus"
