Field Notes

Description:

Medium to large duck with orange bill and feet, light brown body which is mottled with darker brown feathers. Ducklings are black with yellow on cheeks, sides and underbody.

Habitat:

Lakes, ponds, rivers, streams, temporary puddles and road side ditches

Notes:

I saw this family of ducks grazing on the algae growing on the spillway of the dam and knew it was just a matter of time before a duckling would fall to the bottom of the spillway. In a matter of minutes that was exactly what happened. The duckling was unhurt and immediately started calling to the others as it ran first one way then the other along the upper spillway. It tried to climb up but could not make much progress. It worked it's way to the opposite side of the spillway where I lost sight of it the duckling. Seconds later I saw it working it's way up the spillway and I started taking pictures. To my delight this little duckling was re-untied with the others. Nature's lesson - Don't Give Up.
