Field Notes

Description:

Large water bird with gray body, white neck, white or yellow head. Has a long bill with a sharp spur on the end that is usually a pinkish color, though I have also seen orange or gray. They have a large dark pouch under the bill for scooping up fish. Juveniles are almost entirely brown (see 4th picture of juvenile on dock).

Habitat:

Coastal North & South America and Canada
