Field Notes

Description:

Its been a long search to find these elusive and secretive birds despite breeding successfully in my local patch of woods every year. This confiding juvenile was one of two calling for food shortly after the passing of a small thunder storm on a warm summers evening. An adult long-eared owl (presumably the parent of the one pictured) was hunting in the heath nearby.

Habitat:

Coastal heath and mixed woodland.
