Field Notes

Description:

This very small planthopper nymph has a plume of waxy filaments coming out of glands in the abdomen. The plumes prevent dessication or prevent the hopper from being coated by its own sticky waste products from feeding on plants. This specimen has unusual markings on the face. They walk slowly on blades of grass but have a keen eye and are able to move away from potential predators.
