Description:

Realized today that I don't actually know which species of deer (mule? white-tailed? black-tailed?) we have here. I like the velvet antlers on this guy, though.

EDIT: answered - it's a mule deer.

Whitetailed deer have a tail that is brown except for the underneath and possibly around the edges which is white. Blacktails are actually a subspecies of mule deer but are found only west of the Cascade Mountains. This then is a mule deer as it was photographed east of the Cascades. The ears are also very large in proportion to the head compared to a whitetailed. Love the photo with the mountains in the background!
