Field Notes

Description:

Heart-shaped vine. Ground growing. No flowers spotted.
Leaf felt very strong, although it was thin. The front had a very thin glossy membrane.

Habitat:

A peninsula with Indian Ocean on one side and Komati river on the other. This grew on a sand dune with shrubs, a few trees and some other plants.

Notes:

It might look like a very sweet spotting in a peaceful environment, but the truth is that that I had to watch my steps, the place seemed to be used as a "public toilet"...

External leaf characteristics (such as shape, margin, hairs, etc.) are important for identifying plant species, and botanists have developed a rich terminology for describing leaf characteristics. These structures are a part of what makes leaves determinant; they grow and achieve a specific pattern and shape, then stop. Other plant parts like stems or roots are non-determinant, and will usually continue to grow as long as they have the resources to do so. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaf
