Field Notes

Description:

about 3"

Habitat:

disturbed forest, urban

Notes:

I spotted this while hiking on a huge, partially forested hill behind the town of Salento. It's not very wild at all but had enough vegetation and forest cover that I consistently spotted cool things the few times I hiked there.

Nymphalidae, Heliconiinae, Heliconius cydno cydnides f. epicydnides. If you look only at this subspecies from Colombia... http://helicons.chez-alice.fr/HCcydnidesepicydnides.htm http://www.flickr.com/photos/8639190@N05/5459546751 http://www.flickr.com/photos/grandma-shirley/5460148178/in/set-72157626090775264 Same subspecies but not the same form if you compare the markings at the margin of the hindwing. Nice little detail... http://www.flickr.com/photos/pris63/7174410277/
