Johnstone's Whistling Frog
Eleutherodactylus johnstonei
13.1705, -59.6355
Field Notes
Description:
A small frog, abundant on the Caribbean island of Barbados
Habitat:
Everywhere!
Notes:
When travellers arrive on Barbados one of the first things most people notice is the ever present sound of Crickets. This is in fact the sound of these frogs calling. They are ever present wherever there is vegetation, but are remarkably difficult to find. This picture was only obtained after about 30 minutes waiting to pinpoint the sound of a calling frog (with calls echoing all around me) and then searching in vegetation to exactly locate the individual concerned. With the rapid escalation of tourism in the Caribbean these frogs have inevitably found their way to other islands, notably St Lucia.
