Field Notes

Description:

Ripe, edible blackberries. The "berry" on this plant is actually a receptacle. Blackberries and raspberries belong to the same genus, but what distinguishes them from each other is indicated by the receptacle, or torus. If the receptacle picks off cleanly, it's a blackberry; if picking leaves a hole in the berry, it's a raspberry.

Habitat:

Temperate forest.
