Field Notes

Description:

This metallic green jewel beetle with deeply pitted elytra can be found feeding on the nectar of wildflowers.

Habitat:

A dead specimen collected by a friend.

Notes:

The whole genus Stigmodera (7 species) is limited to Australia.
This one was found only in the southern half of Western Australia where grass plains are famous for wildflowers.
Many years ago, a friend collected several and gave the specimens to me.

The genus Stigmodera is a small group of favored buprestids found in all parts of Australia. These two ( also http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/306966012 ) are limited to Western Australia near Perth. I plan to search for some this summer.

Wow, this one is spectacular! I've never seen one with such deep pits. Gorgeous color too.
